North Texas clients we have severe winter weather on approach this week. Here are some tips to prepare your landscape to minimize damage to your garden. Note newer plants that would normally be cold hardy would benefit from protection as they have not fully established themselves. Best to play it safe if unsure.

1. Make sure your mulch is intact. A nice layer of two inches is ideal on flower beds and landscape plantings.

2. Water- ONLY BY HAND at the base of the plantβ€”unless your yard is already wet, give your plants some water. This must be done early in the day so leaves are dry by nightfall or the cold starts blowing in. Plants perform better in severe cold when hydrated.

3. Cover tender plants with frost cloth. If In doubt of a plants cold hardiness, go ahead and cover them. See the photo examples of a clients yard whose perennial garden was being protected. Weigh down the cloth with stones, bricks, water filled jugs or anything that can hold down the fabric from being wind blown.

4. Move potted plants indoors or to a sheltered area if possible. If not, cover plants with frost cloth or heavy blankets.

5. Never use plastic to cover plants as it is a conductor of the cold. Your plants will feel refrigerated.

6. Detach water hoses from faucets and make sure outdoor faucets are firmly turned off and covered. Turn your sprinkler system off if it’s still on automatic.

7. Keep tabs on local news reports for weather updates.
