When we moved here 5 and half years ago one of the first areas we started with was a concrete and small grass area down by the house. ( photo 7and 8) we started by removing the grass and oh my gosh so much junk had been burried in the ground here. But this was to become my first flower border. In the past couple of years we added decking in stages as we could afford it hence the different colours. Then with the use of recycled timber which my husband got free we built the garden room. Using the decking as its base, even the doors were secondhand. But we had to buy the polycarbonate windows and roof plus the cladding. This little area I call my courtyard garden and iv added pots which are home to lots of perennial plants. I always dreamt of having a brick courtyard and brick pathways and that dream is actually now coming true. Well the courtyard bit. Over the past couple of months my husband has been bringing home a 100 bricks at a time. These bricks are being thrown away from the bricklaying department within the college he teaches at. Students can only use them so many times. On top of that we are reconfiguring the entrance into the dining area and instead of cutting through the garden border that sweeps up the hillside itโ€™s now going to come up from the courtyard area. So I can have 1 continuous border. There is also going to be one large climbing frame from the garden room right across over the gate for my wisteria, rambling rose and jasmine. I wanted it to be a kind of picture frame into the garden. My husband has removed the decking and my dream of having a brick pathway and a brick courtyard are being realised and Iโ€™m so blooming excited. ( the decking will be reused for another project ) It will look far more rustic and characterful and create a lovely habitat for insects to x #englishcottagegarden #gardenproject #cottagegarden #courtyardgarden #recycledmaterials
